The inequalities of men and women.

Family setting.

Gender roles are no longer what they used and women are able to go between roles.

Question is if men can take both roles and if it is ok in society.

Jobs have same setting. Men can only fit in a certain. Women can fit in many jobs.

Drinking in bars man has expectation same with social parties.

What is expectable between social setting

Men and women roles what is the defined roles

Bread winners

Men can’t do what women can do like homemaking

Fashion, 40’s 50’s 60’s women didn’t wear pants.

History says that women are a weaker sex.

Loss of identity and role

The gender roles have been blurred. Women have taken over traditional male gender roles.

Men has been pushed out.

English Education: Does the limitations of English education contrict the creativity of the students?

All around us people are trying to prove their authenticity. People like new entrepreneurs who want to better then everyone else. Restaurants who want have the best food. Relatives want to be your favorite. Everywhere you go you meet people that are trying to prove their authenticity

What does Bitzer not mean by “Rhetorical Situation”?
Bitzer does not mean the context in which speakers or witness creates rhetorical discourse.

What does Bitzer mean by “Rhetorical Situation”?
When he says rhetorical situation he means the nature of these contexts in which speakers or writers create rhetorical discourse.

Explain what exigence is. Give your own example of an exigence someone could respond to in writing.
Exigence is a defect, something waiting to be done, a thing which is other than is should be.

Example= A man writes an essay. Mistakenly he forgets to write a conclusion to the paper. He turns it in to his professor. Upon getting it back he sees that the professor gives him another chance to create the conclusion.

Introduction Arguments



In the English studies book one argument that is presented during the introduction is the argument of “What is English Studies and is it in Crisis?” The question question was brought about by a man named Bruce McComiskey who stated that after his fight for the last seat the question popped into his head that he needed to know more about his field. He needed to know what English Studies was. In his view he stated that unfortunately the image of English studies had been discipline, not clear, and confusing. In 1990 Peter Elbow stated that he didn’t know what it was however it was probably a good thing. McComiskey goes on to say that he agrees that the English subject has become very confusing and unclear. Ian Small and Josephine Guy said that the English always had a chance for crisis because there had always been dissent over the nature of the subject. McComiskey gives his opinion that he believes that the English studies are not in crisis and that the problems that we are having with the subject are mendable.

What does Bartholomae mean when he says that students must “invent the university” when they write in college?

He means that the student who is writing the essay, story article, etc, needs to understand that he or she needs to write in different perspectives based on the subject the student is writing about. For example is a student is writing a paper on the revolutionary war. You can't talk about the war through the eyes of a anthropologist you need to talk about it through the eyes of a historian. In essence we need to write our papers as if we were the instructor of the subject.


What does Bartholomae suggest is a way for students to become “insiders” within academic discourse?

A good way that the student can become insiders within academic discourse is to start writing papers and doing assignments as if the student was already in the field that she or he has chosen instead of just do tests to see whether they have knowledge of the field or not.


Summarize some of the differences between the two examples of student writing that Bartholomae examines, and Bartholomae’s opinion of these examples.

Some of the differences of the example are that the first students essay is very short and uncomplicated. He doesn't use much vocabulary and it was later reveled that he copied what he had in his essay from Billy-White Shoes Johnson. The next essay that they use for an example the student uses much vocabulary and then she also contradicts herself a lot. She first tells herself as not being creative but using imitation and then she says that she was creative to a point because she was using her imagination.

Evaluation of previous article

Claim- School in low-income areas should change the student make-up and curriculum.

Data- Increase attendance and tests scores

Warrents- low-income schools want to increase attendance and tests scores

Grounds- (related to data) change curriculum would have kids learning more, More middle class kids would have an effect on the lower making them wanting to do better.

Qualifier-most, some students, majority

Conditions of rebuttal- Even if the school curriculum changes how is the attendance going to be mandated. If the school make-up changes where are all of the other kids going to go.

Due to a report called "A report on public senior high schools: The average daily attendance, FCAT performance grades & socioeconomic factors" which was conducted by Benjamin Cowins SR. PH.D. The following article makes the cliam that the schools that are located in a low income areas are the schools that are high candidates for producing low scores on the FCAT. This cliam states a policy that we should make the lower income schools better so that the students have a better chance at passing the FCAT and graduating. It also states that the schools who have a high percentage of poverty and schools that have low attendance rates by students are also at risk of having a low score on the FCAT. According to the american federation of teachers a way that could help these schools would be that the schools should create a knowledge rich environment that will help the students to get a more world knowledge education. Another suggestion that was given was that the schools should intergrate students with socioeconomic differences. Many studies have shown that making a school have a prodominately middle class with have a good effect on the kids on the bottom and will not have a negative impact on the other students.
